Asia Argento, the Italian actress who was one of the first to publicly accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault, was herself accused of sexual misconduct with a minor. Argento, a contributing founder of the #metoo movement, allegedly assaulted the teenage boy actor Jimmy Bennett in 2013 according to the New York Times.
At the time of the 2013 incident which took place in California, Bennett was only 17 years old and Argento was 37. The age of consent in the state of California is 18.
In October, the New Yorker published a bombshell report that outlined Argento’s 1997 alleged rape by Weinstein. Ironically, the next month Argento received a letter of intent to sue from Bennett’s attorney. The legal documents claim that Bennett’s “sexual battery” was so traumatic that his work and mental health have been adversely affected since the incident.
Anthony Bourdain was Argento’s boyfriend from 2016 until his alleged suicide this past June. He had strongly supported her going public about her rape and throughout the process of her developing into a leader in the battle against sexual assault by the Hollywood establishment.
But, Bennett’s attorney Gordon K. Sattro, claims that his seeing Ms Argento present herself as a victim of sexual harassment was too much to bear. In the notice of intent to sue Sattro wrote, “His feelings about that day were brought to the forefront recently when Ms. Argento took the spotlight as one of the many victims of Harvey Weinstein.”
Jimmy Bennet had worked with Ms.Argento when he was seven years old in the 2004 film “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things”, which she directed, but also had a starring role. The film was about the relationship between a drug-addicted prostitute and her son. From that point on until 2013, the two regarded one another with a mother and son affection.
On May 9, 2013 the two had a family reunion of sorts and met at the Ritz Carlton in Marina Del Rey, California. In an Instagram post, while waiting for Bennett, Argento wrote, “Waiting for my long lost son my love @jimmybennett in trepidation #marinadelrey smoking cigarettes like there was no next week.”
Due to an eye condition which prevented him from driving, Bennett had a loved-one bring him to the meeting at which. Argento asked the person to leave so the two could be alone. She gave Bennett alcohol to drink and showed him notes that she had written to him on hotel stationary. She then kissed him, pushed him back on the bed and performed oral sex on him. Afterwards she climbed on top of him and had intercourse with him.
Follwing the incident, they took a number of photos, some of which were posted to Instagram. The two had lunch and Bennett went back to his home, where he lived with his parents in California. According to his claim, he began to feel “extremely confused, mortified, and disgusted.”
In April of this year Argento agreed to pay $380,000, of which, $200,000 has already been paid. It is unclear if this revelation will discredit Argento’s involvement in the #metoo movement. Some high profile women in the movement have already began to distance themselves from her.
